Venezuela Fact Book WIP
On this page you can see my research that I've done for the fact book of Venezuela. Including mind maps, mood boards, and sketches of the layouts and cover. I was going for a design that gives you a feel of the Venezuelas natural beauty but also a feel for the culture and people.
Mind Map: I created a list of facts that I found interesting about my country to base my research on. You can see that my mood boards reflect many of these facts.
Mood Board: This board is a collection of famous works of architecture in Venezuela that inspired some of the structures of my layout sketches.
Mood Board: This board is some of great natural colors (left) of Venezuela that I pulled some of my ideas from. As far as textures (right) go I was inspired by Venezuelas key exports such as corn, coffee, and fish.
Mood Board: I pulled the font board from my brand guidelines to show that I am sticking with the cohesive natural look that I achieved with these font choices (left). Next is the page layouts that I used to inspire the way I set my pages up (middle). Lastly you can see the themes that I found intriguing when it came to thinking of ideas for this book (right).
Initial Sketches: For the cover and layouts I wanted to stick with a clean natural look.
Detailed Sketches: For the cover the pictures would be of the Caribbean Sea and Angel Falls. Behind the images it would be the same images just fading out to give the cover some depth. For the layout I wanted a clean grid but also break it with images. I accomplished this by providing images and a solid two columns of type, also beside the images will be a description of what the viewer is looking at.
Final Fact Book: Take a look at my final fact book for the country of Venezuela.
Master Pages: For my book I wanted to have a variety in pages so the viewer wouldn’t get bored, but I also wanted to show consistency. Here you can see I used 3 master pages and I also show my grid set up that played a big part in designing this book.
Just for Starters: I needed to experiment a lot to get the look I was going for here you can see this. I was playing with type size the way it flows and the way pictures would play with it. I started to think of cool ways to show statistics by using the diagonal type for more of a striking look.
Now I’m starting to get it: Now I have an idea of what I want this to look like, still have some type issues. I really had to figure out how to spread the text out and make it feel light, because it is way to heavy on the pages.
Still room to play: I decided to do limited vector in my book because it is so photo heavy and I think it’d be strong without them. Instead I chose to do bar graphs over photos instead of my graphic heavy charts I originally made.
Flushed out: Finally I nailed out my major pages and got them where they needed to be. Now with my charts and interesting type breaks, the viewer can see me as a designer. The spaced out text looks so much better and provides much needed breathing room for the images as well.
Lead in’s and interesting graphic: I chose to do the same as I did with the graph to show my country shape. Also I used the one on the left as a lead in page for my sections to tie in the photos and my love of large text.
